Robin Hood (3)

(Series 3 in 2009)

Week Beg. 10/11/08

We are beginning a new 3-week literacy unit of work on 'Robin Hood'.  We'll be exploring characterisation through hot-seating, role play and using a technique called 'decision alley'.  Through these activities we'll be trying to identify with characters such as Robin, Maid Marian and the Sheriff of Nottingham.  Pictures of written work stemming from this will appear here by the end of the unit.

Can you put these Robin Hoods in order of TV appearance?

In numeracy we are looking at division by chunking and how it relates to fractions, decimals and percentages.

In Science we are continuing to look at how solids, liquids and gases change state when they are heated or cooled.

We are beginning to get creative with our 'Africa' topic through creating African masks and Maasai warrior shields.

As a school, we are taking part in 'The Big Sing' - joining with schools across the nation to attempt to break the world record for the most people singing the same song at the same time! This will take place on Thursday 27th November 2008 at 2.45 pm.  If you are a pupil and would like to practise at home, here are the lyrics and backing track.

While we sing, we'll also be raising funds for the following charities:

Week Beginning 02/02/09

We have been using similes to write poetry.  We used the song, 'Never gonna leave your side' by Daniel Bedingfield as a stimulus.  Here are some of our lines we composed...

I feel like a knight without a mace

a game without the rules

the sun behind the clouds

a plane without its wings

I feel like a dad without his son

cause you are the one

I feel like a king without his crown

a torch without the light

a plate without the meal

a lion without its mane

I feel like a child who's lost their mum

and everyday's the same since you've gone away

In our Topic work we have been studying the river Nile and how it used to flood every year during Ancient Egyptian civilisation.  Can anyone remember why it doesn't flood nowadays?

Week beginning 09/02/09

We have been continuing with our focus on poetry - trying to use figurative language to entertain the reader.  Can you find some examples of personification in this poem...

SNOW

Snow speaks to the people its
falling above in the glooming
sunlight.
Its white sparkling voice
echoes
as it falls through
the air.

In numeracy we have been chunking, mostly (to solve division problems).

On Wednesday we looked at some primary evidence of Ancient Egyptian farming and discussed what it might have been like to farm in Ancient Egypt.  Here are some of the wall paintings we studied...

Please can I have the literacy and numeracy homework in by Wednesday 25th Feb.  Thanks

Week Beginning:  22/02/09

"Fifteen men on the dead man's chest

Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!

Drink and the devil had done for the rest-

You-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!" - Robert Louis Stevenson

We have been studying the classic children's novel, 'Treasure Island', by Robert Louis Stevenson, with its infamous pirates and brave adventurer, Jim Hawkins.  See an excerpt from the Disney film version here.  We role played different scenes from the first three chapters.  They feature Billy Bones suffering a stroke - the result of too much rum and Dr. Livesey trying to put up with the rude pirate.

Pictures to follow...

In numeracy we've been collecting and presenting data to find out whether Year 5 have improved in swimming since last year.  Here are our results...

Here is your homework for next week.  If you aren't able to download the files, or don't have internet access, don't worry - I'll give you a paper copy on Monday.

Literacy - (Mr Woods' class)

Try the language activity on this website...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/english/activities/lang_structure.shtml

Week Beginning 3/03/09

Homework - to be handed in on Wednesday next week

Numeracy:

Download the timetravellers worksheet (bottom of page), fill in the grid and then use it to answer the questions... (If you can't download the worksheet - you can find it on www.primaryresources.co.uk under maths - time (it's right at the bottom of the page)

Literacy:  Find a magazine article, newspaper report or online text and highlight all the connectives you can find (e.g. because, however, furthermore, although, despite, later, meanwhile...)

Here's an update on our Egyptian topic...

We've been researching into Egyptian pharoahs and the power they had over their land and people.  We produced some magazine articles to show some of things that would be done for the pharoah.  Examples to appear soon...

We have been learning this song by Colin Buchanan - pharoahs even had their people running after them when they died!

The Mummy Song

You ought to see what they did to my mummy,

pulled his organs out of his tummy,

Put 'em in spice, whacked 'em in a jar,

Painted him up with sticky tar.

Wrapped him in linen from his head to his toes,

pulled his brains out from his nose,

That's not all the embalmers did,

They buried my mummy in a pyramid!

Ancient Egypt, down by the Nile,

Mummy's gonna be in a tomb for a while,

Fair go pharoah, it's not funny,

Tell King Tut I want my mummy,

Tell King Tut I want, my, mummy!

Mummy's in a coffin of shining gold,

Lying in a tomb that's dark and cold,

Jewels and treasures he'll never see,

'cause he's half the mummy he used to be.

Dead as a doornail, blind as a bat,

with a mummified dog and a mummified cat,

Don't ask me what my daddy thinks,

'Cause his chariot's parked at the local sphinx

-Colin Buchanan

Week Beginning - 09/03/09

We have been learning about how to persuade an audience to consider various issues.  We matched up slogans with their products on http://entertainment.uk.msn.com/tv/galleries/gallery.aspx?cp-documentid=7741232 - see if you can remember them.

In numeracy we have been constructing card skeletons, using our recent knowledge of percentages to reduce them in size.

We also learned about the hierarchy of people's roles in Ancient Egyptian civilisation and how without the 'peasants' working for them, Pharaohs, such as Tutankhamun, wouldn't have been as well known as they are today.

Numeracy Homework - Please complete the Percentages sheet - there is a link to the file at the bottom of this page.  If you didn't get a sheet, please ask me for one on Monday.  Thanks

Literacy Homework - 'You should come to Stanbridge school because...'  (use powerful emotive language to persuade a child or teacher to go to your school)

Week Beginning: 16th March 2009

We researched into how Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamun's tomb.  He was born in Kensington, London 1872.  Howard Carter went to Egypt in 1892.  He found Tutankhamun in 1922.  He worked with Lord Carnarvon who provided funds to carry out his excavations.
